Contemporary Kali

Ceramic Sculpture

Nancy Webber

The story of the Tower of Babel appears in my ceramic tower.  The original shape is from Bruegel’s painting. Marking of gibberish are pressed into the body of conical form with openings to insert tongues speaking “TALK TO HER, TALK TO THEM, TALK TO HIM, SAY WHAT YOU MEAN, MEAN WHAT YOU SAY,” and one open hand desiring open communication. Another ceramic sculpture contains tongues cursing Wall Street for the financial collapse of 2008. They come from the mouths of Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Caravaggio’s Medusa, Edvard Munch’s "The Scream,” and Kali.the destroyer goddess of Hindu lore. Kali, a free-standing woman with a blue face and five arms, expresses the multi-tasking nature of contemporary women, as she holds a camera, a cell phone, computer tablet, and a bowl with many breasts forever nurturing.
